The greater San José area is divided into many neighborhoods, called Barrios.

Barrio Amón, northeast of dowtown, an upperclass neighborhood with historic homes and boutique hotels.

 

Los Yoses, east between San José and San Pedro, a residential neighborhood with fine restaurants and small hotels.

Barrio Escalante, west of San José and north of Los Yoses, an upscale residential neighborhood with fine restaurants and small hotels.

 

Moravia, a residential suburb northeast of San José.

Barrio México, a working class neighborhood north of Ave 7 and west of Cale 16.

 

Rohrmoser, an upscale neighborhood west of Parque Sabana with several embassies.

Desamparados, a working class neighborhood south of San José, with a beautiful church and a museum.

 

Pavas, a working class neighborhood west of San José.

Escazú, located southwest of San José, an upscale suburb where many foreigners reside.

 

San Pedro, a popular neighborhood west of San José and home to the University of Costa Rica.
