Continuing west on Avenida 4 is Parque Central, the city’s oldest park. The park is very busy on Sundays when there are free concerts.

Facing the park is the Metropolitan Cathedral, the most important church in Costa Rica. It was built in 1871 after an earthquake destroyed the original church.

To the North, across Avenida 2 the is the Melico Salazar Theater, built in the 1920s and named after a famous Italian opera singer who liked Costa Rica so much he moved to San José in 1937.
