The yellow Castilian fort, Fuerte Bellevista “Fort With a Beautiful View,” was constructed in 1887 and used as the nation’s military headquarters. You can see gun shot holes around the gun slits in the side walls from the 1948 Civil War.

Today the old fort houses Museo National, The National Museum. Museo Nacional exhibits religious and archaeological objects which define the history and character of Costa Rica.

On the west side of the museum is the terraced Plaza de la Democracia, built to mark 100 years of democracy. At the western end of the plaza there is an open air crafts market.
