The tour starts downtown in front of The Teatro Nacional (National Theater). Completed in 1894, construction of the theater was paid for with a special tax from each bag of coffee sold by coffee barons.

The lobby features Italian pink marble and 22- karat gold trim, marble steps, tropical woods and crystal chandeliars. The grand hall seats over 1,000 and the floor can be raised to the level of the stage, creating a ballroom

There is an excellent tour of the Theater available Tuesdays - Sundays. The Viennese-style café is a nice spot to have lunch, afternoon tea, or coffee and dessert

In front of Teatro Nacional, set back in a paved plaza is The Gran Hotel. El Gran has a, popular casino and interior restaurant. Its Café Parisien is one of San José’s best places to sit outside and eat or have a drink.
